The assumptions behind the estimate

Assumes you filed Form MI-W4 with your personal exemptions: 1 if single or head of household, 2 if married filing jointly (you and your spouse, when your spouse does not claim it with their own employer). No dependents and no extra withholding. Michigan uses the same rate for every filing status. We assume you filed your city's W-4 with the exemptions of someone with one job and no dependents (1; 2 if married with one income in the household: you and your spouse), that you work in the chosen city the days per week you entered (all of them if you did not say; the city form states it in steps of 40%, 60%, 80% or 100%, and under 25% that city withholds nothing), and that your employer withholds your home city's tax. An employer with no presence in your city is not required to withhold it: if it does not, you pay it yourself with your city return. If you live in one taxing city and work in another, both are withheld: the work city at its nonresident rate and the home city at its resident rate minus the other city's nonresident rate (never subtracting more than its own nonresident rate).

What is not included

Of Michigan's 24 cities with an income tax, Muskegon Heights is missing because it does not publish its nonresident rate or exemption value: if you live or work there, your paystub will show a city deduction that is not shown here (and your other city's amount may come out higher here than the real one).

Frequently asked questions

How much tax is taken out of a paycheck in Grand Rapids, Michigan?

At $20 an hour and 40 hours a week, a biweekly paycheck of $1,600.00 has $108.15 of federal income tax, $122.40 of Social Security and Medicare and $82.01 of state and local taxes withheld. You take home $1,287.44, or 80.5%. This is an estimate for a single filer with one job and no deductions.

Does Michigan have a state income tax on wages?

Yes. This is Michigan state income tax: a flat 4.25% of your pay after subtracting $5,900 a year per personal exemption.

Are there city or county taxes in Michigan?

Yes. In Michigan we calculate 23 cities, counties or districts with a local tax. Choose where you live and where you work in the calculator to include it.

Is overtime taxed more?

There is no special rate for overtime: it is added to your pay for the period and withholding is figured on the total, which is why the check grows less than you expect. From 2025 through 2028 you can deduct from federal income tax the extra half of your overtime (up to $12,500; $25,000 if married) if your income is under $150,000; it only lowers each paycheck's withholding if you entered it on your W-4.

How accurate is this paycheck calculator?

It uses the official 2026 withholding rules from the IRS and Michigan. It is still an estimate: your employer knows your W-4, your deductions and your year-to-date earnings. It is not tax or legal advice.
