This is Maine state income tax. Your pay is annualized, the standard deduction and one allowance (yourself) of $5,300 a year each are subtracted, rates from 5.8% to 7.15% are applied, and the result is rounded to the nearest dollar. We assume one job, no dependents.

This is your share of Maine's Paid Family and Medical Leave program. Your employer may deduct at most 0.5% of your wages, up to the Social Security wage base. We use that maximum here; your employer may cover part or all of it.

The assumptions behind the estimate
We assume you filed Form W-4ME with the allowances its worksheet gives someone with one job, no dependents: 1 if you are single; 2 if you are head of household (yourself plus the head-of-household allowance); 2 if you are married filing jointly with one income in the household (you and your spouse). Married filing jointly uses the married schedule; single and head of household use the single schedule, as on Form W-4ME. For PFML we assume your employer deducts the maximum allowed (0.5%).
What is not included
If your employer pays a larger share of PFML or has an approved private plan, your PFML deduction may be lower.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax is taken out of a paycheck in Maine?
At $20 an hour and 40 hours a week, a biweekly paycheck of $1,600.00 has $108.15 of federal income tax, $122.40 of Social Security and Medicare and $60.00 of state taxes withheld. You take home $1,309.45, or 81.8%. This is an estimate for a single filer with one job and no deductions.
Does Maine have a state income tax on wages?
Yes. This is Maine state income tax.
Are there city or county taxes in Maine?
We found no local taxes withheld from employee paychecks in Maine.
Is overtime taxed more?
There is no special rate for overtime: it is added to your pay for the period and withholding is figured on the total, which is why the check grows less than you expect. From 2025 through 2028 you can deduct from federal income tax the extra half of your overtime (up to $12,500; $25,000 if married) if your income is under $150,000; it only lowers each paycheck's withholding if you entered it on your W-4.
How accurate is this paycheck calculator?
It uses the official 2026 withholding rules from the IRS and Maine. It is still an estimate: your employer knows your W-4, your deductions and your year-to-date earnings. It is not tax or legal advice.
